Sulfur is a mysterious element. Sulfur compounds are the reason for the smell of rotten eggs and gun smoke, why cutting onions makes you cry, an important part of car batteries, and, unfortunately, that certain taste in Pittsburg’s water.

Senior, Mallory Thompson, was selected as the Kansas Governor’s Scholar for Unified School District 493 for exemplary academic achievements. The award was presented by Columbus Unified High School Principal, Dan Grundy, during the 2025 Senior Assembly, May 18, at the CUHS Gymnasium.

Seniors, Brylie Johnson and Korbyn Newberry received the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Citizenship Award during the Columbus Unified High School Senior Assembly at the CUHS Gymnasium, May 18. The award is presented for excellence as an exemplary young citizen who has demonstrated a marked respect for country, assumed responsibility for improving school and community, and has shown reverence for life. Kerry Sachetta, Columbus Alumni, presented the awards.

First responder luncheon to be September 11

Columbus first responders will be treated to a September 11 drive by luncheon hosted by members of the community.Fire fighters, Police officers and EMT’s are invited to drive by the Lions Shack on south side of the Columbus Park.The meals will be ready between 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
