Council talks road overlay project

Progress to a number of portions of Columbus streets are currently being finalized by City Council as of the May 16 meeting. The City Council elected to send the vendor back to have it reworked to include the bond and insurance costs in the document.

Pre-school project delayed in Baxter Springs

With summer quickly approaching and school coming to a close the Baxter Springs USD 508 school board discussed the end of the school year. Superintendent David Pendergraft gave the Baxter Springs USD 508 School Board an update on the district’s future daycare center.

Drugs, cash seized in car stop

A rural Baxter Springs man is facing felony meth distribution related charges following a traffic stop Sunday night. At approximately 9:30 p.m., Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped the vehicle east of Baxter Springs.
Three marble plaques with gold leaf engraving were pointed out by committee chairman Dick Rauniker. The refurbished monument one honors the original GAR Veterans, one the Prisoner of War and Missing in Action veterans and the new U.S. Space Force representing the first new independent military service since the Army Air Forces were reorganized as the U.S. Air Force in 1947.

McCune to dedicate restored memorial

The dedication of a recreated and renovated 132 year old memorial in the McCune Cemetery will be held Monday, May 30. The original memorial dedicated to the members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was built in the cemetery in 1890 has been rebuilt.

Brandon Lee Holman, 26, was arrested Thursday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, driving while license cancelled, suspended or revoked, driving under the influence; competent evidence blood or breath .

Cherokee County Jail Report

David Alonzo Miller, 57, was arrested Wednesday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of driving under the influence and unlawfully obtaining prescription-only drug and is being held in lieu of $4,000 bail.
