Splash pad set to debut this Friday

The abnormally hot temperatures hitting southeast Kansas are about to pay off in a big way as the city of Columbus’s H and H Splash Pad will be open later this week. A grand opening featuring food, activities and entertainment will be kicking off the coolest summer hot spot May 20 from 4 p.m.

Farmers Market starts Thursday

The Columbus Farmers Market will open to the public this Thursday, May 19. The market will be held every Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 202 N. East Avenue, through October.

Gun, drugs seized during car stop

A variety of narcotics and a sawed off shotgun were seized during an overnight traffic stop conducted late last week. Around 2:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted the stop in a rural part of the county, for a traffic violation.

Building started at Central School

Construction is underway in Columbus, as part of Central School’s new building is beginning to get set up. Columbus Schools USD 493 Superintendent Brian Smith reported the project’s latest updates during the May 9 School Board meeting.

The Baxter Springs Farmers Cooperative held a chick day April 29 thanks to Heartland Hatchery. The Coop’s employees and members of the community were all able to attend the event to purchase a variety of fowl including chicks, ducks, geese and turkeys.

Labette County Jail Report

Keith Edwin Dean, 45, was arrested Tuesday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana and is being held without bail.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Kimberly Ann Barton, 41, was arrested Thursday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of failure to appear and is being held in lieu of $150 bail.
