The theme “Magical Moments” proved to be the case for several award winners Wednesday night. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards were handed out to several citizens recognized for their public service and bringing recognition to the city.

PRIDE to plant trees in city park Tuesday

Greener pastures are on the horizon thanks to Columbus PRIDE’s efforts in securing an orchard grant. City Administrator Jake Letner and City Clerk Cherri Chancellor informed City Council that the group had secured a total of 10 fruit-bearing trees to be planted in City Park next week.

Roadwork okayed in Baxter

Approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects, by the Kansas Department of Transportation for this month included a project near Baxter Springs U.S. 69 (Military Avenue), from the south city limits of Baxter Springs to the north city limits of Baxter Springs and U.S.

Cherokee County seeks gas energy provider

The hunt is on as the Cherokee County Commissioners are actively searching for a new gas energy supplier. The board and County Attorney Nathan Coleman spoke over the phone with Mike Williams from Hamlin Energy as he attempted to help them find a new supplier.

Spring festivities today at Grace and Gratitude

Today, (Wednesday, March 30), Grace and Gratitude will be filled with items ready to welcome the spring weather and festivities. Volunteers have cleared out the winter coats and attire and have donated those items other organizations and recycling programs.

Baxter Springs’ Chapter BT of the P.E.O. Sisterhood enjoyed an evening social and painting event Monday, March 21 in the lunchroom of Lincoln Elementary in Baxter Springs. Angela Burrows and Sue Commons served as hostesses. Members were served cookies, candy and flavored teas.

The Baxter Springs High School welcomed nine new members into the National Honor Society. New inductees include Abigail Burggraf, senior; Michael Colbert, Landon Fisher, Logan Gess, and Hayden Parkison, juniors; and sophomores, Trevor French, Michael Karguth, Taycee Metcalf and Emma Walker.
