County lot employees retire

A retirement reception was held Wednesday for two employees of the Cherokee County Road and Bridge Department. Paul Stone, served Cherokee County for 34 years. He started with the county February 25, 1987. He began as a brush cutter and after a year moved to a dump truck.

Commission will discuss windmills

Following a special meeting on Thursday to discuss how to handle an anticipated invasion of wind farms into Southeast Kansas. The County Commissioners have set aside a one-hour executive session at 10 a.m. on their Monday agenda to discuss the matter with the County Counselor.

Baxter city managers get evaluations, raises

Management employees in Baxter Springs received salary increases following evaluations by Mayor Tim Shallenburger. Each of the department heads received $1,400 annual raise. The salary increases were unanimously approved by the council.

Prizeweek consolation winner

The quest to win the $1,000 grand prize in the Prizeweek Puzzle continues, as last week once again no one matched the preferred answers. The grand prize offers $1,000 in Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificates. Jack W. Brown, Galena, was the consolation winner missing three of the answers.

Seven lawyers vie for District 11 judgeship

Seven attorneys have applied to fill a district judge vacancy created by Judge Oliver Kent Lynch’s August 1 retirement. The 11th Judicial District Nominating Commission announced those seeking the position. The 11th Judicial District is composed of Cherokee, Crawford, and Labette counties.

Fatality accident on Bagdad Road Friday

An accident 100 feet west of the Missouri stateline on Bagdad Road resulted in the death of an Alabama man. A 2002 Buick Le Sabre Custom driven by Klonie E. Smith, 79, Coker, Ala., was traveling east on Southeast Bagdad Road. He went left of center and off the roadway to the left.

USD 493 to hold special meetings

Three special meetings have been scheduled for the Columbus USD 493 school district. The first will be held at 6 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the new 2022 budget Revenue Neutral hearing. The second meeting at 6:15 p.m.
