93rd edition of County Fair

The 93rd edition of the Cherokee County Fair will be the second year the County’s largest event being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to the efforts of the American Legion, Fair Board and County Extension Agents the show will once again go on.

US 160 rumble strips okayed by KDOT official

Rumble strips will be installed on the east bound lanes of US 160 in Columbus just before the junction with highway K-7. According to Pricilla Peterson spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Transportation the rumble strips on the down slope of the viaduct will be installed.

Arm bands sale ends Monday

Two advance fair purchases can save you a buck or two. Purchasing your carnival ride armbands in advance, will save five dollars by purchasing them in advance and not waiting to purchase at the fairgrounds. Monday is your last day to purchase in advance.

USD493 officers re-elected

Officers of the Columbus USD493 Board of Education were re-elected Monday night during the annual reorganization meeting. Robin Wells was reelected president, Ryan Lacen, vice president; Susan Wells, clerk; Lacy Evans, deputy clerk and Lisa Goben, treasurer.

The theft of copper from air conditioning units and the theft of a church van in the Southeast part of Cherokee County earlier this week was reported to Cherokee County Deputies.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Bryan Keith Glover, 43, was arrested Tuesday by Baxter Springs Police officers on charges of possess opiates, opium, narcotic drug or certain stimulant and possess ephedrine or precursor with intent and is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

The following persons are scheduled to appear before Judge John Bullard in Columbus Municipal Court Monday, July 12 at 4 p.m. Jeffery S. Jacobberger, 58, Columbus, appeared for trial on charges of no valid driver’s license. City Attorney Barbara Wright called Officer Preston Hosier to the stand.

BHS choir sings at Kansas Choral Directors event

A special concert was held in Topeka recently. Twelve Baxter Springs High School students traveled took part in the Kansas Choral Directors Association All-State Honor Choir.
