New canopies for the Baxter Springs pool were donated by ATEC Steel and installed by the Baxter Springs City Works Department. The canopies will provide shade for toddler swimmers and their families in the new toddler swimming pool area.

K9 deputy apprehends suspect after foot pursuit

Just after 2 p.m. Monday, a Cherokee County deputy started to initiate a traffic stop on a motorcycle ridden by 31-yearold James Alen Walker. Walker, who had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest, started to elude law enforcement, ultimately fleeing on foot into a wooded area.

Two men in custody on theft charges

Cherokee County Deputies were dispatched to an area east of Baxter Springs on Monday, where a property owner had reported a theft. During the course of the investigation, deputies obtained a description of the suspect vehicle, which they later located in Galena.

Baxter American Legion Auxiliary hosts cornhole tournament

It was a cool morning at the Baxter Springs Kiwanis Park Saturday as the Baxter Springs American Legion Auxiliary hosted a cornhole tournament. A popular game, cornhole can be played at virtually any age level. It is easy to play, score, and transport.

Eight expansion and modernization highway projects in eastern Kansas - totaling more than $297 million investments - have been committed to construction by Gov. Laura Kelly.

Limited Columbus school bus pick up

A plan to have limited Columbus city transport of USD 493 students for the upcoming school year was approved by the Board of Education. Transportation Director Les Welch explained that difficulties in getting a full cadre of school bus drivers has made limited in city student transport necessary.

Marcus Francis Porter, 25, was arrested Sunday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of burglary, use or possess drug paraphernalia for use in the human body and possession of marijuana and is being held without bail.
