Fire fighters Cody Burton and Fire Chief Steven Burton accept a check from State Farm Agent Terry Bessman. The funds are to be used for fire prevention education activities and will be used to purchase smoke detectors and provide educational programs to local schools.

Special guests Dr. Kevin Kemp and his son and assistant Noah Kemp visited the Johnston Public Library July 1 as part of the Tails and Tales summer program. Kemp brought along some animals to show those in attendance. Children learned about becoming a veterinarian and how to examine an animal.

New art show to open at Maple UnCommon

“The Art of Transformation” art presentation will be showing at the Maple UnCommon Guest House and Gallery during the months of July and August. An artist reception will be held Sunday, July 11, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The works of Liz Darling, Nancy Wildwood and Kelsey King will be featured.

Hixon retires from appraiser position

Former County Appraiser Mark Hixon was feted at a retirement party last week. Commissioner Myra Carlson-Frazier presented Hixon with a plaque recognizing his contributions to Cherokee County.
