Park School students were excited to be able to touch and get up close to a med-flight helicopter during the touch-a-truck experience recently. Most of the youngsters were waiting for the arrival of the helicopter.

Second annual county food fight challenge

The second annual Cherokee County Food Fight will take place May 1 through May 14. The communities of Baxter Springs, Columbus, Galena, Riverton and Weir will be competing to see who can collect the most food.

Man faces charges after meth arrest

A Cherokee County man is facing felony meth charges following his arrest earlier this week. Just after 6 p.m. April 28, law enforcement located 33-year-old William Monson at his Baxter Springs home.

Public meeting for school bond

A public meeting to present information on the upcoming USD 493 bond issue and the plans for changes in the school buildings will be held Monday evening. The meeting will be held Monday, May 3 in the Columbus High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Kelly Walters gets KU educator award

A USD 493 language arts teacher has received the “Esteemed Educator” award from Kansas University for her efforts in the Literacy Network of Kansas (LiNK) program. Kelly Walters, was recognized for her efforts while she was a LiNK teacher in the Columbus District by Kansas University.

Baxter talks possible July 4 fireworks plan

A Fourth of July Fireworks Show was suggested to the Baxter Springs City Council by Mayor Tim Shallenburger. The Mayor suggested contacting several local organizations for donations to finance the show.
