Commission advised to watch budget

Helms sentenced for shooting at officer

A 15-year prison sentence was handed down to Tony Lucian Helms, 53, of Baxter Springs, Friday after he entered a guilty plea in Newton County Circuit Court. He was sentenced on one count of unlawful use of a weapon for aiding or abetting the shooting a firearm from a vehicle.

Prizeweek consolation prize winner

The grand prize of the Prizeweek Puzzle continues to go unclaimed as several entries came close last week but still no winner. Jack Grant was drawn from two of the entries that missed three and he gets the consolation prize this week.

Sales tax bill sent to Governor

The Kansas House of Representatives Thursday voted 119-4, with two abstentions, to approve the bill allowing Cherokee County to collect a onehalf percent sales tax to pay for ambulance service in the county.

Norma Kloer, 70, was arrested Wednesday by Crawford County on charges of making a false information, forgery; making or altering a written instrument an theft by deception; felony and was released on $5,000 bail.

Labette County Jail Report

Theron Chaney, 74, was arrested Thursday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of use or possess drug paraphernalia for use in the human body, driving while suspended, possession of controlled substance and possession of marijuana and is being held without bail.

Area Accident Report

A car vs. deer accident occurred February 25 at approximately 6:37 p.m. A 2020 Ford Escape driven by Tracy Vanatta, 54, Columbus, was traveling north on Northeast Highway K7. Vanatta struck a deer in the roadway near Northeast Coal Valley Road. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated.

Cherokee County Beekeepers to meet Tuesday

The Cherokee County Beekeepers will meet Tuesday March 9 at the Cherokee County Extension Office at 6:30 p.m. Members and non-members are welcome to attend and do not have to reside in Cherokee County. Everyone is welcome. A major part of meeting is education.
