Beef Night rescheduled March 11

Cherokee County K-State Research and Extension will host a Beef Night March 11 at the Cherokee County 4-H Building in Columbus, Kansas. This meeting was previously scheduled for February, but due to weather, is scheduled for March 11.

City of Columbus Court Docket

The following persons are scheduled to appear before Judge John Bullard in Columbus Municipal Court Monday, March 8 at 4 p.m. Steven D. Beaty, 42, Columbus, is scheduled for an initial appearance on charges of domestic battery.

PSU commencement plans announced

Pittsburg State University has announced commencement plans for spring that will, like Fall Commencement, look different than pre-pandemic ceremonies. In the past, Spring Commencement has been held in four ceremonies — one for each of the university’s four colleges.

In recognition of the birthday of Dr. Seuss, students at Central Elementary School in Columbus participated in reading activities as well as crafts and games. The youngsters also decorated cookies with designs based on themes from a number of Seuss’ books.

Lions Club members were having their annual bean and soup feed Thursday. Club member David Groves was pouring the five gallon bucket of cooked beans into the roasting pan to keep them hot.

Good year for Recreation Department

Over 825 youngsters participated in Columbus youth athletic leagues during the past year despite the pandemic. Each of those leagues receives funding from the Park and Recreation commission.
