Area firefighters were kept busy last week

Area firefighters were kept busy last week with fire and special aid calls. Columbus firefighters were dispatched to the house fire at the corner of 700 N. Ohio and Lake at 11 a.m. on Friday. Attic fire with double roof made the fire difficult to control.

Flames were extruding from the gaping hole

Flames were extruding from the gaping hole in the roof on the west side of the building shortly after firefighters arrived at the scene. Fire trucks were somewhat hampered by the snow and slick conditions.

Soil, Water Conservation meeting planned tonight

It was 75 years ago the Cherokee County Conservation District held their first annual meeting. Just ten years after the passage of the Conservation Bill HR 7064, on March 6, 1935 counties were allowed to organize as Conservation Districts.

Prizeweek Puzzle consolation winner

The Prizeweek Puzzle contest came close to being solved last week but once again the puzzle won as Carolyn McKee missed two of the preferred answers to take the consolation prize of ten dollars in Columbus Chamber of Commerce gift certificates.

Cold snap sets 121 year record

As the temperature climbed back above freezing Saturday, after 14 days of bitter cold weather local residents were getting out of the warm confines of their homes. Tuesday, February 16 the local temps fell to 14 degrees below zero eclipsing the previous record set in 1979 at minus 1 degree.
