Conservationists meeting celebrates Carlsons’ farm

It was 160 years ago that John Michael Carlson homesteaded a 160 acre farm in northern Cherokee County . Four generations later, the farm remains in the same family as that homesteader’s great-great grandson Joe Carlson continues the farm operation today.

Duo arrested following foiled burglary attempt

Shortly after Cherokee County Deputies were dispatched to suspicious activity at a vacant home north of Galena just before 2:30 p.m. Monday, a Baxter Springs duo was taken into custody after their mid-afternoon burglary attempt was foiled.

Soil, water stewards note 75th anniversary

Programs administered by the Cherokee County Conservation District saved 1,149 tons of soil, reduced the Phosphorus runoff by 615.90 pounds and contributed $75,102 to the Cherokee County economy.

COVID cases decrease

Less than 1,000 COVID-19 cases were reported by the state of Kansas since Friday. The state reported 883 new cases over the weekend, as well as 29 new deaths and 32 new hospitalizations – the lowest numbers have been for months. Cherokee County has 2338 total cases since tracking began.

Community blood drive exceeds goal

With the four-state blood bank nearly overdrawn, the large turnout on Monday during the monthly blood drive in Columbus was a welcome outcome. “I had set our goal at 35 pints and we have 38 right now,” said Susan Schultz, local chairperson for the drive.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Dylan Scott Shaner, 27, was arrested Saturday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of abuse of a child; inhuman corporal punishment under age 18 and battery and is being held in lieu of $8,250 bail.
