Newman graduates announced

Newman University has announced their Fall 2020 graduate candidates. Carrie Napier, from Columbus, will be graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in May of 2021.

Workers began removing abandoned gasoline storage tanks from the property at on Seventeenth Street and Military Avenue. The City of Baxter Springs owns the property and is planning to build a new fire station in that location.

Land Bank ready to accept property

More than $20,000 in county, city and Columbus USD 493 taxes and special assessments on a property located at 201 East Maple, were abated by the Columbus City Council during their meeting Monday night. If the donation is completed this would be the first property to be owned Columbus Land Bank.

City Council approves adding 300 feet to sewer line project

An approximate 300- foot extension of the High School Street sewer project was approved to accommodate adding additional sewer customers to the line. A property owner currently in the county on High School Street would like to annex to the city at some time in the future.

Area Accident Report

A two-vehicle accident occurred January 15 at approximately 4:18 a.m. A 2015 Peterbilt Semi driven by Harold Harmon, 53, Chanute and a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Christian Burke 26, Parsons, were both traveling east on Northwest Highway 400. The Chevrolet rear ended the Peterbilt Semi.
