James Joseph Grant, 74, of Scammon, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Via Christi Village. Born October 14, 1948 at Pittsburg, Jim was the son of Joe and Gertrude (Pargen) Grant. He attended grade school in Scammon and St. Rose Grade School in Columbus. He graduated from Cherokee County Rural High School with the Class of 1966 He went to Pittsburg State University and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Jim joined the VISTA Volunteers of America for one year and worked in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. He then served in the Peace Corp for three years, teaching college in South Korea, followed by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1974 until he was honorably discharged in 1977.
Jim lived in Omaha for forty years, marrying the love of his life, Dolly. They were married for 20 years before she passed away from cancer. He moved back to Scammon to live and lived with his sister Ann after her husband passed away.
He was employed in Insurance sales with the Mutual of Omaha insurance company.
Jim held a membership in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, where he was a devoted Altar boy for years. Jim loved music and to read, reading over 1000 books.
Jim is survived by three sisters, Ann Everitt and Betty Jansen both of Scammon, and Sister Mary Josetta Grant of Clyde, Mo.; and several cousin, Mary Guinn (husband, Terry) of Joplin, Mo., Josetta Bayless (husband Bill) of Carthage, Mo, Harold Willard (wife Rioxanne) of Reeds, Mo Melinda Dever (husband DeWayne) and Johna Dixon both of Houston, Texas and Julie Brixey (husband Jack) of El-Paso, Texas.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a halfbrother. Father Mario Gramlich.
A parish rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 10 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Father. Jeremy Huser will serve as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Scammon. Online condolences can be left at www.brennermortuary.com.
