Colton James Bond, beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, 21, died Friday, May 26, 2023, after an accident in Labette County. Born May 23, 2002, in Chanute, Colton was the son of Jim Tom Bond and Kelly Lynn (Dickinson) Bond.
Kind and hardworking are two words that stick out the most when considering Colton. He always made people feel loved no matter who they were or what they looked like. From the little kids his age, he competed with. Competitor. That is another word to describe him; he wanted to win and succeed. Whether that be calf roping, team roping, or his newest enjoyment, steer roping, but most of all, life. He wanted to be successful, and he wanted it for himself. Colton was an appreciative person through and through; he didn’t hesitate to say “thank you” and always being so respectful no matter the time or place.
Colton pushed to be successful in the arena and outside. Inside of it, he had won numerous buckles and saddles. Nothing compared to that of him training his horses and being so proud of that because that itself was quite an accomplishment. Training them and then succeeding on them, along with letting others ride his horses. Colton trained head, heel, calf roping, and steer roping horses and later enjoyed competing off of them, along with his little brother Tagg helping alongside. Along with training, he was shoeing numerous horses for the public, anything to do with a horse or a rope; Colton was involved.
Colton competed in many rodeo associations, including; Kansas Junior and High School Rodeo, Kansas Professional Cowboys Association, United Rodeo Association, and American Cowboys Rodeo Association. In the Kansas Junior High Rodeo, he was the 2016 Calf Roping State Champion and also qualified for the National Junior High Finals that year in both calf roping and team roping. He was the 2019 Kansas High School Rodeo State Champion in calf roping, and the following year 2020; he was the State Champion in team roping with partner Jaylyn Hash. Making many trips to the National Junior High Finals and National High School Finals, he then moved up the ranks to college rodeo. He started fall of 2020 at Garden City Community College, where he was successful as a calf roper and team roper. After being done with school, he then went closer to home at Coffeyville Community College, where he made seven out of ten college rodeo short rounds for the year 2022-2023; he competed in events of calf roping, steer roping, and team roping with long-time friend Trevor Meier. They finished the year 8th in the standings, just missing the College National Finals by a few spots. Just a few short months ago, he competed in the steer roping qualifier and qualified for the first-ever National Finals Steer Roping College Division. They just competed at Clarendon College on Monday, May 29th, where the first-round buckle was in memory of Colton.
Colton enjoyed spending time with his family at cookouts and being from the roping pen to Christmas spent in Minnesota.
His impact on people will never be forgotten; he was a one-of-a-kind man. There will never be another Colton James Bond with a loving and giving heart and an ornery grin. All will dearly miss him; the best words of the week were, “To know him was to love him” and “If you didn’t love Colton Bond, it wasn’t his problem; it’s a you problem.”
Forever missing and loving him is his mother, Kelly Bond; father, Jim Tom Bond; brother, Tagg Bond; maternal grandmother Bernice Dickinson; maternal aunts, Dawn Sundly and husband Tom, Kathy Olson and husband Tom, Chris Thompson and husband Brian; paternal aunts Jacque Hamilton and husband Jim, Lisa Bond; along with many cousins, extended family & friends.
Colton was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather (Dale Dickinson); paternal grandparents, Jimmy and Barbara Bond.
A memorial has been established for Colton Bond Memorial Fund, in the care of Robson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hugoton, Kansas 67951.
