Vernon Handshy, 70, Columbus

Vernon Wayne Handshy, 70 of Columbus, died unexpectedly June 4, 2023 at his home. Born January 27, 1953, in Joplin, Mo., Vernon was the son of Wayne and Letha Handshy. They preceded him in death. Vernon was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Marlin.

Vernon graduated Columbus Unified High School with the class of 1971. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses March 5, 1983.

Vernon and Lee Ann Robison were united in marriage December 19, 1987 at Miami, Okla. Lee Ann was his best friend and caregiver and he affectionately called her, ”Missy.”

Vernon was a hard worker. He farmed with his dad and brothers his entire life. Beginning from a very young age, he was caring for livestock and driving a tractor. For many years, he raised pigs. He and Lee Ann enjoyed caring for the piglets and watching them grow. Vernon had a vast knowledge and brilliance for fixing machinery. You knew he was teasing when he grinned from ear to ear, showing his amazing dimples.

He will be missed by his surviving sisters Elaine Handshy, Lilly Reeves (husband Dan), Nellie Handshy and Patricia Hanford (husband Jason) and brothers Mike Handshy (wife Marcy) and David Handshy, several nephews, nieces, aunts, and uncles.

Cremation arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus. Memorial Service arrangements are pending.
