Wanda Hevel, 92, Oswego

Wanda L. Hevel, 92, of Oswego, died Saturday, July 8, 2023 at home with her family beside her. Born January 4, 1931 in rural Chetopa, Wanda was the daughter of Jesse and Beatrice (Schertz) Eckles. She attended Piety Hill Elementary and graduated from Chetopa High School with the class of 1949 as valedictorian of her class.

Wanda and William (Bill) Hevel were united in marriage February 4, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He preceded her in death January 21, 1985. They lived for a short time in Mound Valley before moving to Oswego in 1951 where she has lived ever since.

A homemaker, Wanda worked at the abstract office and later at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. She was an active member of the Oswego Christian Church for over 70 years. She was involved as a volunteer in many community activities including Girl Scouts, Red Cross, St. Johns Hospice, Meals on Wheels and Oswego Hospital pink ladies.

Wanda is survived by one son, Michael (Cindy) Hevel of Waverly; two daughters, Susan Souders (Buddy) of Altamont and Laura Kaiser (Larry) of Plano, Texas; one sister Luella Paine of Bartonville, Texas; four grandsons, Michael Hevel, Ray Fisk, Josh Hevel, Matt Hevel and five granddaughters, Sondra Hall, Daphne Flores, Macey Foster, Emily Freeman, Erin Hecker and numerous great and great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by an infant son, John William Hevel, two brothers and one sister.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 13 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Oswego Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 14 at Oswego Christian Church. Burial will be in the Oswego Cemetery.
