Columbus mayor gives annual appointments

Shortly after the start of the regular Columbus City Council meeting Monday evening, Mayor Grant Spieth gave his appointments for approval.Annually in June the mayor is required to present his choices for various community positions to the city council for approval.

Council proceeds with condemnation

After more than three months, the structure located at 514 South High School Avenue will continue with the condemnation process.The Columbus City Council originally condemned the structure in March and held a public hearing.

K103 west of Weir to close for repairs

K-103 west of Weir will be closed Wednesday, June 24, so a Kansas Department of Transportation crew can replace a drainage pipe under the highway.The highway is expected to be closed for the day, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., conditions permitting.

Time to order memorial pavers

It is that time of the year again. The Veterans Memorial located at the northeast corner of the square by the Cherokee County Court House in Columbus will be engraving granite pavers honoring veterans.

The rumor mill around the former Pizza Hut building in Columbus can officially be decommissioned.Owners of Bamboo Chinese Take-out in Pittsburg have announced Columbus Bamboo will be operating out of the former pizzeria in the weeks to come.Bamboo opened their first restaurant in Pittsburg in 1985.

Democrats hold meetings in Cherokee County

The Cherokee County Democratic Party met April 9 at the Galena City Hall Community Room, commencing with the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes were read and approved, as was the treasurer’s report.

Wilson named to UMC spring Dean’s List

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) Dean’s List for the Spring 2026 semester has been announced.Shelbi Wilson from Columbus has been named to the list.The Dean’s List includes undergraduate students who achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or above.

Honor rolls announced by Emporia State

Chesny Billings of Columbus, was one of nearly 700 Emporia State undergraduate students named to the university honor roll after the spring 2026 semester. To qualify for the university honor roll, students earned a minimum 3.80 semester grade point average in at least 12 graded hours.
