Instruct the ignorant

The second of the spiritual works of mercy is to instruct the ignorant. Like the first (to warn the sinner), this must be entered into with a spirit of mercy and humility. No one thinks of himself as ignorant, so our teaching may come across as pedantic and pharisaic.

Friday, July 8 •Columbus Summer Lunch program 10:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Drivethru only. No inside seating. Saturday, July 9 •Columbus Freedom Fest. Freedom Run 5K registration begins at 6 a.m. at City Park. Run begins at 7:15 a.m. Kids Run begins shortly after 7:15 a.m. inside City Park.
Freedom Fest will be held Saturday in Columbus City Park. Hosted by the Columbus Fire Department, the event will bring back many of the family oriented games and activities. One popular event, the egg toss, is messy. But, the firefighters always make sure to clean the roadway to maintain safety. Games and activities will begin at 5 p.m. with the fireworks beginning at around 9:30 p.m.

The Freedom, enjoyed by Americans will be celebrated in Columbus Saturday, July 9. The Columbus Fire Department would like to invite the community to head over to Columbus City Park for the first Freedom Fest and fireworks display.

Holmes leaving for Regional FCS position

Long time Cherokee County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent, Christina Holmes, will be leaving the Columbus office for a new position. Holmes recently accepted another position with K-State University as the Regional Family and Consumer Sciences Specialist.

Schools return to charging for lunches

After two years of providing free lunches to all students at the area schools congress did not extend federal support of the meal waivers program. The school meals will no longer be free to all students free of charge.

Liberty customers asked to conserve

Liberty Electric issued a peak advisory for all Liberty electric customers for Friday, July 8, due to ongoing extreme heat resulting in high energy demand. Liberty asks that customers voluntarily reduce electricity use throughout the day and particularly between the hours of noon and 8 p.m.

Help feeding low income families in the area

To help feed low-income areas of Southeastern Kansas, Life360 Community Services is expanding its summer feeding program (SFSP) to the towns of Pittsburg, Baxter Springs, Riverton, and others in the area. This program is available for children ages 18 and under.
