Planters talked at Chamber lunch

Talk has circled around the downtown Columbus’s planters and what different groups have or have not wanted to do with them. Many of those rumors were recently put to rest during the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly meeting April 13.

Mosey over to BS Cowtown Days

Dust off your boots and saddle up for Baxter Springs Cowtown Days. Events kick off Friday May 6 at 6 p.m. with Cowtown Idol featuring some of the area’s best musical talent. Be sure to catch the hot dog eating contest afterward. Plan to spend a full day Saturday, May 7.

City to vacate Bay Avenue property

As luck and circumstance would have it, two Columbus landowners are due to receive additional property soon. City Council made a decision to vacate a vacant plot of land that sits between 233 N. Bay Ave and 235 N. Bay Ave as part of their April 18 meeting.

One-way street by Harps okayed

One frequently used alley in Baxter Springs will become one direction soon. The alley that runs along the east side of Harps Grocery Store will be formally treated as a one-way to the north following the April 26 City Council meeting.

Birdwatching workshop planned

The Wildcat Extension District will be hosting a Birdwatching Workshop Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in McCune. Join them on a walking tour to learn how to identify birds. Registration for this workshop is limited to 15 people. You are asked to please bring binoculars if possible.

Scottish Rite requests RSVP

All members of the Southeast Kansas Scottish Rite are asked to attend the Stated Dinner and Meeting Thursday, May 5 at the Armstrong Masonic Lodge, 3105 North Joplin Street, Pittsburg. Social Hour begins at 5:30 p.m., Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. and the Meeting will start at approximately 7 p.m.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Chandra Lynn Thompson, 42, was arrested Thursday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on three counts of probation violation and is being held without bail.

Labette County Jail Report

Matias Jose, 27, was arrested Tuesday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of operating a motor vehicle without valid license and vehicle liability insurance required and was released on $538 bail.
