Hixon appointed to Board of Tax Appeals

Retiring Cherokee County Assessor Mark Hixon has been appointed to the Kansas State Board of Tax Appeals by Gov. Laura Kelly and is awaiting conformation by the Kansas State Senate. Hixon has been the Cherokee County Appraiser since 2015 after serving in Shawnee County.

Ice House program returns to Columbus

The 8-week Ice House Entrepreneurship Program starts next week on March 25. This program is designed to help participants develop their entrepreneurial mindset. The course will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m.

News-Report buys News Advocate

Larry and Sharon Hiatt, publishers of the Columbus News-Report have announced their acquisition of the Cherokee County News-Advocate and SEK Voice from Gannett Co., Inc. The Cherokee County News-Advocate is published in Baxter Springs.

Columbus Public Library board March meeting

The March 8 meeting of the Columbus Public Library was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by President Curtis Wheatley. Also present were board members: Becky Shearburn, Becky Glover, Kelly Walters, Linda Griffitt, Jessica Rider, and Maggie Mooney.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Kyle Wayne Myers, 43, was arrested Sunday by Baxter Springs Police officers on charges of disorderly conduct and is being held in lieu of $75 bail. Lynn Lee Ball, 55, was arrested Saturday by Weir Police officers on charges of driving while suspended and was released on $500 bail.
