Preparing the pulled pork sandwiches for the Back the Badge fundraiser Sherrie Nida was kept busy. The Saturday fundraiser required 1,280 pounds of pulled pork for the 1,150 sandwiches delivered to supporters. Cooking of the meat began at 3 p.m.

Baxter Springs seeks new board member

A new member is being sought to replace resigned board member Dusty Deringer on the Baxter Springs School Board. After discussing the possibilities, the board moved to begin the search for a new school board member to fill the available seat.
Award winners at the Cherokee Homecoming car show on Saturday included Jack Johnson and Aden Smith. Smith was recognized as the future of the car show and Johnson was recognized for his dedication to the show over the years. Both winners are in front of one of three cars shown by Johnson.

Cherokee Homecoming features food, festivities

Four large caldrons filled with hot soupy beans were consumed by visitors to the annual Cherokee Homecoming which kicked off Friday evening with the bean feed. The beans were the drawing card but the various fruit cobblers by Kristie French were the capper.
The County Commissioners moved their budget hearing to the district court room expecting a large crowd. Due to their projections of a drop in the county tax rate, the taxpayers apparently didn’t want to object to a decrease and stayed away.

Planning for a large crowd at the budget hearing Monday evening, it was moved into the District Court Room from the Commissioners Room. As it turned out the Commissioners office would have been sufficient.
